COMBINED GRADUATE LEVEL EXAM (CGL)

The Staff Selection Commission - Combined Graduate Level examination (SSC CGL) is one of the most prestigious and sought-after competitive exams in India. Conducted annually by the SSC, this examination aims to recuit staff for various posts in ministries, departments, and organizations of the Government of India.

STRUCTURE AND STAGES

SSC CGL is a two-tier examination since 2022:

1. Tier I: Preliminary Exam

  • Format: Objective-type multiple-choice questions.

  • Sections: General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, and English Comprehension.

  • Duration: 60 minutes.

  • Total questions: 100.

  • Purpose: Screening and qualifying candidates for Tier II.

2. Tier II: Main Exam

  • Format: Objective-type multiple-choice questions.

  • Papers: Two papers - Paper I and Paper II.

  • Duration: 3 hours for paper I and 2 hours for paper II.

  • Total questions: 150 for paper I and 100 for paper II.

  • Purpose: Deeper assessment of candidates' abilities in their respective domains.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Educational Qualification: A bachelor's degree from a recognized university or institution.

  • Age Limit: generally between 18 and 32 years, varying according to the post applied for, with age relaxation for reserved categories.

SYLLABUS HIGHLIGHTS

  • General Intelligence & Reasoning: Analogies, similarities and differences, space visualization, problem-solving, analysis, judgement, decision-making, visual memory, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, verbal and figure classification, arithmetical number series, etc.

  • General Awareness: Current events, India and its neighboring countries, history, culture, geography, economic scene, general policy, and scientific research.

  • Quantitative Aptitude: Number systems, computation of whole numbers, decimals and fractions, relationship between numbers, percentages, ratio and proportion, square roots, averages, interest, profit and loss, discount, partnership business, mixture and alligation, time and distance, time and work, etc.

  • English Comprehension: Understanding of the English language, vocabulary, grammer, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms, and correct usage, etc.

Clearing the SSC CGL opens the door to various government jobs such as:

  • Inspector of Income Tax.

  • Inspector (Central Excise).

  • Inspector (Preventive Officer).

  • Inspector (Examiner).

  • Assistant Section Officer.
